Capillary fringe

Zone of a porous medium above the water table within which the porous medium is saturated by water under pressure that is less than atmospheric pressure.

The lower subdivision of the unsaturated zone immediately above the water table in which the interstices are filled with water under pressure less than that of the atmosphere, being continuous with the water below the water table but held above it by capillary forces.
