Global Navigation Satellite System, the Russian equivalent to the American NAVSTAR GPS. GLONASS was designed to provide worldwide coverage. GLONASS has three orbital planes containing eight satellites each, when all slots are filled. GLONASS satellites are failing at a much higher rate than they are being replenished, leaving the system operating a diminishing capacity.
